CONTROVERSIAL plans to demolish the Abbey High School to make way for a ring road have been backed by Redditch councillors.
The council is to 'go it alone' in support of the Abbey route despite a recent reversal of policy by the development corporation which decided not to back the plan.
Councillors rejected an impassioned plea to change their minds and support the Wellington Road route made by parents and members of the public.
The district council is now the only local authority still committed to the scheme.
Plans for the mile-long road between Prospect Road Hill and the Coventry Highway are now at a standstill pending further talks take place between the district and county councils and the development corporation.
