A PLAN to build two blocks of flats a stone's throw from Redditch bus station has been refused by councillors following neighbours' concerns.

Barteak Developments had applied to Redditch Council to build two three-storey blocks of flats behind houses at the bottom of Plymouth Road.

The site has already been the subject of controversy when councillors previously refused permission for houses on it - the decision being overturned on appeal.

In the end plans for the houses were dropped by the developer and blueprints for flats drawn up instead.

Council planning officers felt the plans acceptable on condition that some more landscaping be introduced into the scheme to "soften" the visual impact.

But despite their recommendation, councillors on the planning committee last week disagreed.

Neighbours had complained about the overbearing and dominant nature of the plans and the effect on their privacy.

They were also worried about increased traffic and noise.

Planning committee vice-chairman Councillor Pat Wilson said: "Residents do have a right to enjoyment of their own properties and it is fair to say these flats would be overbearing.

"It seems to be happening more in Redditch. Maybe because it's so hilly, people find they're going to be overlooked by new developments."
