EVESHAM'S junior sculling squad travelled to Strathclyde Water Park near Glasgow for the National Championships.

This is the premier event for club rowers and the competition was fierce.

In blustery and sometimes stormy conditions, the Evesham members put in an excellent performance to return home with two silver medals.

In the women's J14 singles, Sara Howe qualified for the repechage in a fast first heat and achieved fifth position in the semi-final.

In J14 quads, Chloe Farrar, Emma Purfield, Rebecca Wood and Olivia Jeacock, coxed by Catriona Baird, came up against arch rivals St Leonard's.

In a close final, the Evesham crew fought hard and came through in silver medal position, well ahead of Royal Chester.

In the highly competitive women's J15 doubles, Cherry Gayton and Emma Woodedd came through two heats to contest a close final.

Having fought all season with rivals Newark, they led the race for the first 1750m but, in a strong headwind, the heavier Newark crew pulled through to take gold.

This was the girls' last event under Norman Baldwyn who, as chief junior coach, has presided over an unprecedented period of success at the club and he will be sorely missed.

Andrew Walker travels to Athens this weekend to compete for Great Britain in quad sculls at the World Junior Champion-ships.

The event is a dress rehearsal for the new Olympic rowing lake, and more than 60 supporters are travelling to Athens to support the team.

Having tasted success at the 2002 European Championships, the talented Evesham rower is looking forward to competing on the world stage for the first time.
