CYCLING: Stourport's Liam Preece continued his fine season in the saddle by becoming GHS regional champion on Saturday.
The 15-year-old Wyre Forest Cycle Racing Club rider clocked 23 minutes 41 seconds in the 10-mile event at Alcester and now goes forward to next month's national final.
The teenager, who has already won the national schools title this year, came home 64 seconds ahead of runner-up Simon Holt, of Newport CC.
Steve Burns was the quickest Wyre Forest club rider in the Speedwell BC open 10-mile time trial at the same venue, recording a time of 22 minutes 48 seconds.
He was followed by Ian Smith 23-11, Tony Richardson 24-26, John Callaghan 24-57, Dave Wood 25-0, and Richard Pedersen 27-21.
The overall winner was Richard Bradley, of Stourbridge CC, with 21-18.
Burns added to his success on Sunday when he came seventh in the Mercia CC 25-mile time trial at Fradley, finishing strongly in 55-54.
The winner was Barry Charlton, of Stone Wheelers, who recorded 52-54.
Rob Cole was just 13 seconds over an hour at the Hirwaun Wheelers' 25-mile time trial at Glenneath, South Wales on Wednesday.
In the club time trial competition, Preece extended his overall series lead when he won on the 10-mile course at Warndon in 23-39. Dave Wood was second, maintaining his lead in the veterans' competition in 24-59, and he was followed by James Smith 26-05, Brian Clarke 28-15 and Pedersen 27-28.
