GARDENING CLUB: At the July meeting members enjoyed an informal talk by Mrs Betty Foster of Wyre Piddle on Preparations for Shows. This was particularly appropriate as the Flower, Produce and Handicraft Show takes place on September 13 in King George's Hall. Mrs Foster gave several tips on presentation and spoke from a judge's point of view. Mrs Beatrice Kitchen won the competition for a single rose.
On July 11, 72 members had enjoyed an evening in Mr and Mrs Maslin's lovely garden. The weather had been kind.
On July 3, Anne Suffield had arranged a successful day's visit to Home Farm and Willow Lodge on the Gloucestershire/Herefordshire border. Home Farm is a beautiful cottage garden with far reaching views and Willow Lodge a four-acre plantsman's garden with unusual and rare plants.
CHURCH FETE: With grateful thanks to the proprietors of The Kings Arms, for having the use of their facilities, together with the wonderful soothing sounds of The Jazz Salan Rouge, playing throughout the entire afternoon, at the annual St Lawrence Church Fete. Even the weather was beautiful and the event well supported by parishioners. The fete was opened by the newly appointed shared vicar the Rev David Vince.
There were the usual side stalls, books, plants, cakes and white elephant, and the well donated tin and bottle tombola was well supported.
A fun tug of war took place - a friendly match between patrons of The Kings Arms and The Butchers Arms. Then a tug of war between the children, boys against the girls - a lot of friendly cheating took place to the amusement of onlookers.
Earlier there was a fancy dress competition for the children, five and under winners, Georgina Morse, Amelia Smith and Cassey Griffin; six and over, Alice Yates, Oliver Moss and William Underwood.
Garden tray competition was won by Katie Ellis and vegetable animal won by Charlie Holloway. The pet show winners were Robyn and William Underwood and Jordan Horsefield.
