A CAMPAIGN to bring a hot-air balloon festival in Evesham was launched this week.
The event could start next year and be timed to coincide with the town's carnival.
Town and district councillor Andrew Dyke said that Evesham would be the ideal location for a balloon festival and is calling for support in the town.
"Everyone I have spoken to so far has been very excited about it," he said. "The meadow is an ideal site to hold a balloon festival and the location of Evesham is also perfect - very rural with lots of places for them to land."
Mr Dyke said that the festival could be held over three days next year between June 25-27. This would coincide with the town carnival, which is organised by the Round Table.
Vale of Evesham Round Table chairman Stuart Beech said his group was interested in being involved. "It is something we are very keen to take forward and develop as an idea. I think it is a good idea to combine the carnival with a balloon festival."
One of the highlights of the festival would be evening 'night glow' displays followed by fireworks. Balloons are tethered a distance in the air and their burners are fired to give an aerial display of colour and light.
"The festival would be one of those things that would attract people from miles around," said Mr Dyke. "It would be very good for the economy of Evesham and surrounding areas."
Lewis Hammond, Wychavon's market town manager for Evesham said he supported the plan. "It would be a wonderful event for the town but to make it happen is going to take a lot of dedicated work from a team of enthusiasts. We are going to have to get our act together in the next month if this event is to happen next year."
In order to bring the plans to life volunteers and sponsors are needed. "We need as many people as possible to come forward and get involved if this is to be a success," said Mr Dyke.
Anyone who thinks they can help the balloon festival take off is asked to call Evesham Town Council on 01386 47070.
