A LARGE field of competitors entered the midweek medal competition on the last day of the recent hot spell.
Over recent weeks the scores, particularly in division one, have been exceptional and the standard of play continued to be so in this competition.
Three players, Paul Meakin, Colin Preece and the former chairman and club captain, Terry Price, all returned scores of 68, three strokes below par. Their scores could only be separated on the usual count-back system.
As a result, Paul Meakin was placed in fourth position. Senior golfer, Colin Preece, was placed third and Terry Price placed second. All three, however, were beaten by club director Andy Davis, who returned with a score of 67, four strokes better than par for the course.
The scores in division two were somewhat disappointing, in that no player broke the course par of 71. Four players, however, equalled the par score on the day and the competitions committee took some time to separate them into their correct positions.
Andy Green was placed fourth. David Colliver came third and Phil Berry second. The division two winner was Mark Downes, who had a much better back nine holes than the other three.
Forty-four ladies competed in the very difficult combined bogey/ par competition. Two players, Zena Lloyd and Freya Recordon-Durksz, both returned the very creditable score of seven. Zena and Freya will now be involved in a play-off to establish the winner and the runner up.
Betty Mitchell and the former assistant secretary, Ruth Scott, achieved fifth and fourth place respectively with a score of four. Two players returned to the clubhouse with a score of six but Vicky Lane was placed third and Cathy Harris fourth.
In the final of The Grannies' Cup, a close competitive match was played between former lady captain, Jean Coleman and the present ladies' secretary, Linda Mackie. Both players have been in excellent form recently.
Jean and Linda both played below par in the final and only one point separated them at the end of the game. Jean Coleman had to be satisfied with the runners up spot, having returned a score of 38 points. The winner of The Grannies' Cup, however, was Linda Mackie who returned the very credible Stableford score of 39 points.
