HAVE you ever sat in the cinema, watching the latest blockbuster when, suddenly, a piece of classical music is playing on the soundtrack?
Can you identify it straight away? I very rarely can.
This new CD by Naxos will put me, and probably many more, out of misery because the film and the classical music have been identified for you.
I would have guessed that one of the themes in 8 Mile, a movie directed by Curtis Hanson and starring the irrepressible Eminem (rapper of note. so I am told) and Kim Basinger, was Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumble Bee, but would have been flummoxed by Cancons I Danses No.6 by Frederico Mompou which features in Star Trek: Nemesis.
Others are, however, well-known and well-loved - Hungarian Dance No 5 by Johannes Brahms (the Eddie Murphy movie I Spy), the first movement from Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No.14 Moonlight (K-19 The Widowmaker, starring Harrison Ford) and Nessun Dorma from Puccini's Turandot (Ben Affleck's flick The Sum of all Fears).
If I have one criticism it is that none of the artistes performing the tracks are named, which can be annoying, but having said that this is a pleasant CD with a collection of music that is familiar and relaxing.
