AN organist who has played all over the country says the instrument at Ledbury Parish Church is one of the finest he has ever used.

Paul Derrett, organist and choirmaster at Upton Parish Church, has recorded a CD of music by composers such as Bach, Mendelssohn and Mozart on the organ at Ledbury's St Michaels and All Angels' church.

He said: "I'm very impressed with the quality of the organ. I've played at much larger churches and cathedrals but this one sounds lovely.

"There are about 3,000 pipes, I think and nearly all of them sound perfect."

Mr Derrett has picked unusual pieces from well-known composers, in the hope that people will hear the music afresh and really listen to the sound of the organ.

He will play some of the works at a free public recital in the church on September 27.

Mr Derrett, from nearby Dymock, has recorded more than 20 CDs, but says that organs continue to fascinate him.

He said: "You're not listening to just one sound. It's always changing and the weird and wonderful noises you can make are endless."

His latest CD took about six hours to make and although Mr Derrett says it was hard work, the peace of the surroundings meant it was relatively quick and the end result always makes it worthwhile.

He said: "When someone approaches you and tells you they have your CD from a particular concert, it's very nice. What else can you get these days for £10 that you get pleasure from again and again?"
