THE Broadway Community Award has been given to tourist office worker Dottie Friedli, who will donate the £50 to the Salvation Army.

The annual Broadway community award, which has now been running for three years, was the brain child of Dr Walter Wentz, who retired to Broadway from America.

He was so overwhelmed by the welcome he received in the village he decided to set up a tribute to those who devote time to the community.

Dottie said: "I was a bit embarrassed when I found out I had won the award. There are lots of people in Broadway who do masses of things so it was a bit strange they chose me, but I'm not going to turn it down."

She said she had always given to the Salvation Army on a regular basis. "Their newsletter is always full of positive things they have done and cheerful, positive stories about people they have helped. While others can be harrowing and disturbing and leave you unable to sleep at night, the Salvation Army will give someone a second-hand suit so they can go to a job interview. Everything is so worthwhile."

The winner chosen by the council receives £50 to give to the charity of their choice and has their name inscribed on a plaque in the Lifford Hall. Sadly, Dr Wentz was unable to congratulate Mrs Friedli because he has now returned to his homeland.

There were three nominations for this year's award but Dottie was chosen for all the hard work she does in the community, including her role at the tourist information centre in Cotswold Court.
