ELECTRICIANS are being offered an exciting incentive to help Droitwich score a winning goal with this year's Christmas decorations.

Last year's display was criticised by many people and the celebrations turned out to be something of a flop as a result.

Now the Droitwich Spa Association for Retail, Tourism and Services (DARTS), wants qualified local people to install a dazzling new set of lights.

A previous plea for help in putting the sparkle back into the festivities fell on deaf ears among the town's residents.

So now DARTS has decided to make the idea more appealing.

The first two electricians to volunteer their services will win a luxury, once-in-a-lifetime day out to watch Birmingham City at their St Andrew's ground.

They will be collected by stretch limousine and taken to watch a Blues match from the comfort of a private box, where they will enjoy dinner and drinks before being collected and driven home in style.

"I think the thought of such a great prize should entice quite a few local electricians," said Kevin O'Hara, vice chairman of DARTS and manager of the Salters Shopping Centre.

"The reason we are asking for help is because we only had £5,000 to spend on decorating the town this year.

"This money would pay for a contractor to put up the old lights or pay for new ones, but with no one to erect them. We opted for the latter."

Any other interested electricians who apply after the prize has been won, will be offered weekend breaks.

Volunteers will have to act quickly, however, as there is just under a month until the lights are turned on.

Former Hi-de-Hi star Ruth Madoc, who is appearing in pantomime in Malvern, will be doing the honours on Friday, December 5 and Father Christmas is due to make an appearance on a motorised sledge.
