A COUNCILLOR known for his keen wit and debating skills has died after a long illness.
The Rev David Short, who represented the ward of St Nicholas in Herefordshire, passed away on Saturday and tributes have since been pouring in from council colleagues.
Council leader Roger Phillips said the 60-year-old was held in high esteem by all parties and regarded as a model councillor who represented his electorate with vigor and determination.
"He was very committed to local government and the local community," said Coun Phillips
"We will miss his shrewd scrutiny and his political personality in the council chamber."
His long and distinguished career in local government politics started with his election to Hereford City Council in 1971 and then Hereford and Worcester County Council two years later.
After a short break from county politics, he was re-elected to Herefordshire Council in 1997 where he served as the cabinet member for Housing. The Liberal Democrat was then re-elected in May 2003.
Council chairman Peter Harling said: "He'll be remembered with affection as an engaging, humorous and often passionate debater".
Coun Chris Chappell added that he was respected across the political divide and highly intelligent.
"In a debate with David you had to have your wits about you," he said.
"He'll be sadly missed by the community and I shall miss him as a colleague."
Mr Short also served as chair of the Hereford and Worcester Combined Fire Authority and in 1988 he received an MBE for public and political service.
