THERE were no contenders to take on the role of Mayor of Droitwich this year as was usual ahead of the annual selection meeting. Fortunately Alderman Bradley saved the council much embarrassment at the eleventh hour by agreeing to take on the job as he had four times in the past. The Messenger said it hoped his public spirited action would inspire younger councillors to come forward in future.

ONE of Bromsgrove's most highly esteemed residents, Robert Hall of High Street, died, aged 71. Never a man to crave the limelight he had however, been at one time or another, a member of every public body in the town. During his lifetime he had been a clog maker, coal merchant and pawnbroker.

A MEETING was held at Bromsgrove Town Hall to discuss setting up a branch of the St John's Ambulance Corps in the town. One already operated at Aston Fields in conjunction with the railway company. A subscription list was opened at the meeting to raise cash to buy an ambulance.

A SERIOUS accident happened on Tuesday when a horse harnessed to a cart belonging to a representative from Spreckleys of Worcester broke free from railings to which it was tethered at Bradley Green and galloped at full speed towards Droitwich. The crazed animal swerved to avoid a lamp in Victoria Square and careered towards a window in Mr Bourne's hairdressing shop but was stopped by railings. It smashed through these however, and fell some two feet onto a path, which finally brought it to a halt. The horse suffered cuts and the cart was severely damaged.
