A CRIME-BUSTING action plan is being drawn up to combat anti-social behaviour, graffiti and tighten safety and maintenance at Droitwich railway station.

The move, hoped to include closed circuit cameras, follows talks between Spa town councillors and Central Trains.

Councillors John Cook (Lab-West) and Terry Spencer (Con-South West) met Central Trains' Pete Rose last week to discuss the Union Lane station. They are now formulating an action plan detailing a raft of improvements with CCTV cameras, to curb anti-social behaviour, top of the list.

The bill looks set to be picked up by a funding partnership between Wychavon District Council and Central Trains.

Cllr Cook said: "There is a definite call for CCTV cameras in the station area.

"It has become a popular hang-out spot for youths, drinking alcohol and leaving litter like beer cans lying around. It is also necessary to have CCTV as a matter of safety.

"A concrete block, which had been placed deliberately on the line could have caused a serious accident.

"I just hope the Central Trains officer that did attend the inspection did not just log the incidents and then forgets about it," Cllr Cook added.

Other issues that were addressed were weeds on the tracks, the state of the shelters and the need to ensure passengers pay for tickets even when the station is unmanned.

Cllr Terry Spencer who also sits on Wychavon District Council said: "We found the representative from Central Trains extremely helpful and he agreed to draw up a plan of attack to improve and regularly maintain the station.

"The main thing we need is CCTV cameras, which was backed up in a letter sent to me from Inspector Brooker.

"We are hoping to set up a joint partnership between Wychavon District Council and Central Trains to help maintain the station. I am looking to put this on a future agenda."

A spokesperson from Central Trains said the rail firm regularly paints out any graffiti and is delighted to get involved in any partnership project in the future.
