THE long, dry summer continued right into October when the rambling programme took place exclusively in the Cotswolds.

On October 6, more than 20 members walked eight miles of the classic countryside between Ebrington and Ilmington, south of Stratford, taking in extensive views northwards over the Midland plain.

It was still warm enough to sit and eat sandwiches on the handsome village green at Ilmington, surveying the developing autumn colours on the surrounding trees before enjoying a pint at the village pub.

The Rissington villages, near Bourton-on-the-Water, were the setting for the second walk of the month, led by Alex and Helen Koscica.

During the nine-mile walk, 25 members visited three churches.

Alex explained that the church at Wyck Rissington was well known for its connection with Gustav Holst, at one time its organist and conductor of a local choir.

By way of contrast, the church at Great Rissington is famous for its connection with the RAF.

In the churchyard are the graves of many young airmen, including some who gave their lives during the Second World War.

Instead of a third walk in October, the group arranged a coach trip to Westonbirt Arboretum, near Tetbury.

Once there, 52 members and friends split into two groups for guided walks around Silkwood and the old arboretum.

Organiser Josie MacCormack had been watching the splendid autumn leaves in Redditch for weeks, hoping they would stay on the trees until the end of October, and that this would also be the case at Westonbirt.

The renowned maples and acers there did not let the visitors down. Westonbirt, like Redditch, had been celebrating the finest display of autumn colour in most people's memory, and everyone enjoyed it to the full.

What to do on a ramble in case of emergency was the subject of a special meeting on October 2.

Louis Thomas, from the Red Cross, told of the measures to take in case of falls, stings and even heart attacks.

As well as advising on the contents of a suitable first aid kit, he also said that a mobile phone could be vital.

Members are planning to take part in a first aid course eary next year.

The AGM was held on October 16. Pat Hodgkinson, the retiring secretary, reported that the 70 members had enjoyed a varied and successful programme in the past year.
