A MAN who had been drinking swore and spat at police before kicking out at a female officer, causing her finger to bleed.

Adrian Ward was in the Faithful City's Angel Place, when he was spotted by patrolling police officers at 2.30am, on Saturday, August 16, Worcester Magistrates Court heard yesterday.

The 25-year-old, who was living in the centre of Worcester at the time, was carrying a bottle of alcohol in a no alcohol zone, said prosecutor, Stephen Davies.

Mr Davies said Ward's speech had been slurred, and Ward began swearing at the officers, before they attempted to arrest him.

"Mr Ward would not allow officers to apply handcuffs to him. He was throwing his arms about," the prosecutor told the court.

Police officers tried to restrain Ward on the floor, but he resisted arrest and began spitting, before kicking out, breaking PC Vanessa Haller's nail, said Mr Davies.

"He broke off a nail to the left on her little finger, ripping the skin which started to bleed," said the prosecutor.

Neil Coulson, defending, said Ward did not realise it was illegal to walk in Angel Place with a bottle of alcohol.

"When he resisted, he was pushed to the floor, and he was put in a very uncomfortable position, this is why he was kicking around," said Mr Coulson.

Ward, of Haybridge, Hagley, admitted resisting a police officer in the execution of her duty, and admitted being drunk and disorderly in a public place.

Magistrates fined him £100 for the resisting arrest, £50 for being drunk and disorderly. He was ordered to pay £50 compensation to PC Haller, and court costs of £150.
