THIS concert of musical favourites from the world of opera and theatre proved once again that you do not have to hit the bright lights to hear top class singing - and most of the talent was home-grown.

Sisters Beverley and Claire Worboys, and baritone Jonathan Darby, all Wyre Forest stars, were joined by tenor Michael Robinson, who accompanied the singers on the piano, as well as singing himself. Unfortunately he did tend to sing into the piano, rather than towards the audience, so it was sometimes difficult to hear him.

The programme promised "An evening of song from Bach to Broadway", and we heard the Bach/Gounod setting of Ave Maria, O Mio Babbino Caro from Gianni Schicchi by Puccini, a selection from The Merry Widow, through songs by Noel Coward and Jerome Kern, to items from Cats and Phantom of the Opera, sung as solos, duets and quartets.

Two duets by soprano Beverley and mezzo Claire were highlights of the concert - Flower Duet from Lakme, by Delibes, and I Know Him so Well from Chess. The two voices blend together perfectly, and I would love to hear the ladies duet again.

Rapturous applause followed Jonathan's performance of Where is the life? from Kiss Me Kate by Cole Porter. He has just finished a spell in this musical and was still in character - a terrific performance.

Loud shouts of encore were successful in persuading the artistes to re-take the stage and we were treated to their version of Malotte's setting of The Lord's Prayer, which I have never heard sung as a quartet before, but it was beautiful, and a wonderful way to end such a superb concert.
