JUDO: The Bev Price Team Championships saw Kidderminster's Samurai Judo Club take golds in three of the five categories.

Samurai dominated the boys' lightweight teams again to make up three of the semi-finalists.

Wesley Connor, Callum Lowe and Benjy Connor won all their qualifying matches 3-0 and edged out Kettering 2-1 in the last four.

In the other semi, Jack Roberts, Alex Dowling and Robin Woodward recorded their fourth successive win to defeat bronze medalists Greg Oertel, Edward Connor and Charles Woodward 2-1.

The Connors and Lowe triumphed 2-1 in the final, while Samurai's fourth team, of Daniel Spivey, Andrew Edlin and Michael Edlin, were seventh.

Samurai showed progress in the boys' heavyweights as all four teams made the final stages.

B Connor and Danny Williams won several matches to end up fifth, despite being a player short.

Karl Gaughan, Matthew Lowe and Stewart Wilson were all on excellent form with a fine win over old rivals Worcester and a thrashing of Cheltenham.

Gaughan looked sharp with a maximum-point win against the current British champion and an epic six-minute draw with club-mate Ben Newbury.

But he could only take bronze with Lowe and Wilson after a narrow defeat on points against Newbury, Ryan Pitcock and Ben Dowling.

The three victors were beaten in the semis by Samurai's top team of Tom Walker, John Connor and Kyle Everton 3-0 but took a bronze in the end.

Against Worcester in the final, Walker won in less than a minute and J Connor in eight seconds to grab gold medals with a 2-1 success.

The girls, made up of the impressive Kelly Edwards, Kerrie Pitcock and Emma Butler, were fifth.

The ladies took an impressive gold medal with Sue Cosnett and Helen Taylor coping on their own after an injury to Emmy Kimberley following two wins.

They ground out 2-1 wins over teams from Northampton, Nottingham and Germany.

In the strong men's category, Paul Clarke, Keith Waldron and Gary Harper started well to reach the quarter-finals. Clarke gained stylish victories over several black belts but they were knocked out 2-1 by Portland from Derby.

Asa Payne, Kevin McCauley and Mat Godfrey made the semis after two 3-0 successes and a 2-1 defeat of technically excellent Erdington opponents.

They then beat strong Hereford 2-1 to face Portland at the last stage but had to make do with a fine silver medal as only Payne won in the final.
