Buildings in the Vale of Evesham have scooped four out of the five awards up for grabs in a competition organised by Wychavon District Council.

Entries for the 2003 "Built in Quality" contest were nominated by members of the public before a panel of judges made the final selection.

The judges included members of the council's Development Control Committee, a member of the Federation of Master Builders, representatives of local civic societies and the head of building control from a neighbouring authority.

The Vale winners were 1 Beach Close, Evesham, in the New Build Extensions category; Karlingal (OK), Bishampton and Mulbury Cottage, 2 Cherry Orchard, Charlton, in the New Build Dwellings up to five Plots category; The Red House, Bredon, in the Conversions category; and Plot 21, Pershore, in the Industrial and Commercial section.

The competition aims to recognise the quality of construction and level of customer care given by Wychavon builders and developers.

Wychavon's Building Consultancy Manager Steve Evans said: "Over 60 nominations were received which made the judges' task a very difficult one. But we are delighted that so many residents took the time to recognise these quality buildings which have obviously impressed them in some way."

Wychavon's Heritage Manager Jim Burgin said : "It is vital that new developments in the district make a positive impact on the area.

"These awards recognise the hardworking architects, developers and builders who go the extra mile to make sure Wychavon's buildings are of the highest quality."

Another five Vale properties were commended in the awards. They are The Shieling (OK), New Street, Childswickham; 5 Badsey Fields Lane, Badsey; 1 Allesborough Farm Cottages, Pershore; 1 Springfield Drive, Evesham; and Schloetter, New Road, Pershore.
