STOCKTON-on-Teme racing driver Justin Dawkins helped the Star of the Midlands team to a dominant victory in the Smart Turnout Grand National at Silverstone.

He and the other team members received their prize from legendary three-times world champion Sir Jackie Stewart.

The team event formed a part of the prestigious Walter Hayes Trophy knockout event for Formula Ford 1600 single-seater racing cars.

The two-day event, organised by the British Racing Drivers Club, drew drivers from all over Britain and Ireland to compete in three heats, two semi-finals and the grand final.

Dawkins, aged 19, who has been racing for less than two years, had an excellent weekend, taking third place in his heat, fourth in the semi-final and fifth in the final in his Direct Vehicle Leasing-sponsored Van Diemen RF90.

The final was run in appalling weather, but unlike other drivers Dawkins stayed on the circuit. Starting from seventh on the grid he drove a sensible race and picked up places when other drivers spun off the track.

His fifth place helped seal the team event for the Star of the Midlands team, which also included Midlands champion Peter Daly and Gavin Wills.

"The weekend was ace," said Justin. "I think that fifth was pretty respectable given the calibre of the drivers I was up against and I'm really pleased that also managed to get second place in my class in the final."

Dawkins also finished fourth in the Daly Systems Star of the Midlands FF1600 Championship at Mallory Park, and hopes to improve on that position next year.
