EXPANSION plans drawn up by University College Worcester have been given wholehearted support by Worcestershire County Council.
The multi-million pound proposals, which would see a second campus built on the disused Castle Street infirmary site, were hailed by councillors who unanimously agreed to back the plans at yesterday's full county council meeting.
Councillor Andy Roberts, who represents Claines, said the scheme fitted in with council aims to widen Worcester's employment and cultural base.
He welcomed the impact the plans would have on the city's industry and educational development although he wants UCW to meet local residents face-to-face to discuss plans.
"So far consultation has either been behind closed doors, or through surveys and focus groups that have not sought the views of local people," said Coun Roberts.
"Perhaps they fear consultation in case local people and their representatives think that young people can be boisterous, noisy and on occasions a nuisance.
"Well they can, but it's no good turning a blind eye to the risk. Anyway, that underestimates the tolerance and maturity of the folk of the Faithful City."
