A MALVERN peer has appealed to the Belgian government to review plans for a road extension over a World War One battlefield.

Lord Faulkner of Worcester is chairman of the All-Party Parliamen-tary War Graves and Battlefield Heritage Group and recently visited the disputed site.

The bodies of British soldiers have been discovered after the Belgian government gave its permission for archeological digs.

The site at Pilkem Ridge has been undisturbed since the 3rd Battle of Ypres (Pass-chendaele) in 1917 but is on the route of a projected road scheme.

Lord Faulkner has had an active involvement in the case for two years after being contacted by a senator in Belgium.

Lord Faulkner, who attended the burials of two unidentified servicemen found during the excavations, said the issue was sensitive as the group did not want to be seen to be interfering in a domestic road scheme.

However, he said he was hopeful the road may yet be re-routed.

He emphasised the respect the Belgians still hold for events of World War One.

Every night at 8pm there is a service at the Menin Gate when the Last Post is played.
