The son of former England goalkeeping legend Peter spent two seasons at Hartlepool before his free transfer move to Third Division opposition Harriers.
An attacking midfielder who also filled in at wing-back, he moved from Plymouth Argyle to Coventry as a teenager for £125,000.
With seven Premiership appearances under his belt, the Nottingham-born left-footer was released and ended up in the north-east.
Shilton, capable of beating his man and getting in a good cross, was brought in to give Harriers balance and started on the left-hand side of midfield.
But he soon lost his place under Jan Molby only to emerge as one of Ian Britton's stars last season with some consistent displays, six goals and a string of assists.
Signed a new one-year contract in the summer and is likely to again be the main operator on the left-hand side.
