JOHN Brain paid tribute to Worcester Rugby Club's pack following their 43-17 victory at Plymouth.

The director of rugby was full of praise for the forwards as they controlled proceedings at Brickfields.

"That was the best performance of the season," said Brain.

"We knew this was going to be a test for us down here at Plymouth but we've come through with flying colours. All credit to the team but I have to take my hat off to the forward pack.

"That was a powerful display by them and they should be very, very proud of what they've done. That performance lays down a strong marker that we mean business this season."

With Worcester changing their fitness coach in the summer to Phil 'The Power' Richards, the emphasis changed to give the Warriors a physical edge. Five months on, and that strength is clearly showing.

"Certainly the players are stronger, there's no doubt about that," added Brain. "If you are stronger, you are more confident at close quarters and with driving play. Certainly, Plymouth didn't expect that physicality from us.

Dimensions

"They expected us to be a running team. Now, we are. We like to play that way but we are also a driving team now and you really have to have both dimensions to your game.

"Against Plymouth we had both dimensions and when we play like that, we are a match for anyone. We are far more confident in our ability to drive teams back this season and to be honest, the backs want to see the forwards take control.

"When you go places like Plymouth, Birmingham and Exeter then your forwards have to take control of the game. They did that against Plymouth and to a man they were magnificent."

If the success was won magnificently on the field, the coaches must also take credit for the game plan in Devon. Worcester's lineout proved a constant thorn in Plymouth's side, while the hosts often found themselves on the back foot in the scrum.

"I spend quite a number of hours watching videos and my job really is to give the players information," said Brain. "They generally use that information very well and they did that again.

"Our discipline and defence was also superb, though, and all-round we can be very pleased with the performance. It was a thoroughly professional performance.

"I hope this kick-starts the next few weeks for us because we know it's a crucial period."
