IT is most unusual for me to be writing to you, finding myself in agreement with both Mike Foster MP and Peter Luff MP.

They were reported in the Evening News on Friday, November 7 as being in favour of abolishing the six district councils in Worcester to save money.

It is quite clear that our city council has lost nearly all the functions it used to carry out, due to successive governments removing the services and either handing them to quangos or to the private sector.

The last major service to be handed to the private sector was the Housing Department with all the council houses - early in 2004.

We will be left with Development Control, Environmental Health, bin collections and the rump of leisure services that Mr Luff's city friends have not closed already.

At the same time as these services have diminished to almost nothing, the administration has remained at the same level or even grown.

Large departments of personnel, finance, legal services and administration, including the Chief Executive and his deputy's departments continue apace and consume large amounts of taxpayers' money to little purpose.

It is time that this waste was stopped and a Unitary authority of South Worcestershire - or even the whole of Worcestershire - was established, saving millions of pounds.

It is not something I truly welcome as I believe democracy is best served when it is close to the point of delivery, but enough is enough!

COUNCILLOR ROB PEACHEY,

Worcester.
