ENGLAND spin bowler Ashley Giles (pictured) made a late rally with the bat but could not save his side from humiliation in Sri Lanka.
Batting at number nine, Droitwich Spa-based Giles hit 21, the second highest English score behind Paul Collingwood's 31, as Sri Lanka thrashed England by ten wickets in Dambulla yesterday (Tuesday).
Giles, who plays county cricket for Warwickshire, hit one boundary from 54 balls before being caught by Jayawardene as the tourists were skittled out for a woeful 88 in the first one-day international.
Sri Lanka needed just 13.5 overs to wrap up victory with Giles not even getting a chance to bowl.
England now move on to Colombo for the second and third one-day games this Friday and Sunday ahead of a three-match Test series.
