A STROKE victim in Worcester was left "shaken" and "upset" after he was mugged just outside his front door.
John Trueman, of Vicarage Court, St Paul's Street, off St Martin's Gate car park, was returning from a shopping trip at about 5pm when two young men confronted him on the stairway of his block of flats.
They snatched his wallet, which contained around £100, and ran out of the building.
Mr Trueman, who is recovering from two strokes and has limited movement on his right-hand side, was knocked against a wall during the attack.
The 60-year-old then staggered to a balcony on the third floor and tried to shout for help.
However, his speech has been impaired by his poor health and the first passers-by to see him assumed he was simply waving to them.
A neighbour, Len Ainsbury, eventually heard Mr Trueman and called the police.
"The police came within five minutes but the thieves were long gone," said Mr Ainsbury, a secretary of Vicarage Court's residents' association.
"John has had several strokes in recent months and, although he has the use of his arms and legs, he is by no means fully recovered.
"It's a terrible situation but, unfortunately, it seems to be happening more and more, especially to the elderly or more vulnerable people like John," said Mr Ainsbury.
Paramedics were called to the incident which happened on Monday evening and described Mr Trueman as "shaken, but uninjured".
"It was nasty but it is just one of those things," said Mr Trueman, a professional gardener.
"The money is annoying but the main thing is that I was not hurt. It's something you have to put behind you and move on.
"It happened virtually outside my door but it certainly won't stop me going out or make me nervous about being here."
The police are investigating the incident at Vicarage Court, but are unable to release descriptions of the youths.
