A CONTROVERSIAL mobile phone mast for Droitwich looks set to be given the go-ahead today, despite huge opposition.

Wychavon District Council planning officers have recommended councillors approve a scheme to erect a 17m tall pole to the rear of The Weighbridge, in Union Lane.

But the mast, which would replace an existing one in the car park opposite the railway station, has provoked uproar among town councillors and residents.

Droitwich councillors have expressed fears that the town is becoming a "boiling pot" of radiation and have called for more research into the effects of masts.

But the district council has said the mast complies with all regulations and therefore health is not a consideration.

"The main issue is the visual impact of the mast," said a spokesman.

"The mast is proposed to replace an existing one nearby and therefore it is considered the visual impact of the new structure will not be materially greater than before."

This has done little to appease protestors, however, who have called for the mast to be scrapped altogether.

Town councillor Graham Gopsill insists health IS the issue.

"Masts are just popping up all over the place. This new mast is for "third generation" phones and the health implications are not fully known," he said.

"I have already had many complaints from residents of Acre Land, who will be the most affected. We have to stand up now and say more."

One such resident is Jacqueline Hughes, who said: "I am completely against this mast. The health implications are not yet known and we have children living in this area."

Wychavon's development control committee is due to make its decision on the mast this afternoon at 2pm.
