THE man arrested in connection with the death of Herefordshire skydiver Stephen Hilder was yesterday released from police custody.

The 24-year-old man from Leeds has been released on police bail pending further enquiries, and is due to return to Scunthorpe Police Station at a date next year.

Police are now in consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service and a file of evidence will be sent to them for their consideration.

Officers were keen to point out that the investigation into Stephen's death remains ongoing and officers are continuing enquiries.

"I am still very keen to speak to people about Stephen's death and urge anyone who knows anything about the circumstances surrounding the events of Friday, July 4, to contact me in confidence," said Det Supt Colin Andrews, who is leading the enquiry.

"I firmly believe that whoever was responsible for Stephen's death has confided in a third party and that somebody knows exactly what happened to him. That person must now come forward and share with me exactly what they know.

"I remain confident this case will be solved and the person or people responsible will be brought to justice."

The 20-year-old former Army cadet, from Stretton Sugwas, died during the National Championships of the British Collegiate Parachute Association at Hibaldstow airfield.

His main chute and reserve cord had been deliberately cut.
