A PROFOUNDLY deaf Kidderminster man who has helped raise thousands of pounds for district charities over the years has become the last winner in our Three Cheers! awards scheme.

Antony Maciocha, 52, became deaf when he contracted meningitis as a baby - but he has refused to let his disability hold him back.

"He has always lived life to the full and has always wanted to help other people whenever he can and in any way he can," said his mum Betty, who nominated him.

Antony, known as Tony to many of his friends, teaches British Sign Language at Kidderminster College, is on the committee of Worcester Deaf Club and helped found Kidderminster Deaf Club.

He was, until recently, a regular marathon runner and a member of the Kidderminster-based Amazing Feet running club, helping to raise hundreds of pounds for charities.

And with his mum he has also organised a tombola event at the annual mayor's ball in the town for years, with all funds raised going to district charities and voluntary groups.

Mum Betty added: "He's a very caring man. He looks after me now that I'm disabled and is always looking for ways to do his bit for others.

"I think I'm probably reaping the rewards now for what I did for him as a boy, helping him and encouraging him to lead a full life.

"When he developed meningitis at the age of 10 months I was told he would never be able to lead an independent life - how I wish that doctor was alive now to see how he has turned out!" she added.

Antony has been voted the November winner in our Three Cheers! awards scheme, run by the Shuttle/Times and News in association with award sponsors Wyre Forest Community Housing.

Antony is the last of eight monthly winners to receive a £100 cash award through the scheme.

He said: "I'm proud to receive the award."
