HOCKEY: Rampant Stourport defeated Doncaster for the first time in National League Division One with a superb 5-1 home win on Sunday.
Phil Lashford, Luke Edwards, Dave Tuckett-Good and Imran Yousaf (two) secured Stourport's second win of the season.
With few early chances, Lashford opened the scoring on eight minutes with a calm finish past the exposed Doncaster keeper.
A harmless looking high ball forward from Imran Yousaf had rebounded off an unfortunate defender into the path of the forward.
Stourport were pushed hard by their visitors but a combination of poor finishing and excellent goalkeeping by debutant Stuart Hendy kept the lead intact.
The home side added a second against the run of play on 28 minutes when, after a move involving Mark Moss and Irfan Yousaf, Lashford crossed for Edwards to score his second of the campaign at the far post.
The lead flattered Stourport and Doncaster replied a minute later with a well-taken Stuart Boddy short corner.
Stourport enjoyed most possession in the second period without creating clear chances, while Senior, Owen Brotherton, Kelshaw and Tuckett-Good were well organised defensively at the other end.
A deserved third goal arrived on 50 minutes through Yousaf's quick hit and Tuckett-Good found the net via a defender's stick.
Moss was given a temporary suspension after being harshly judged to have knocked the ball away after the whistle.
But Stourport, with Hendy in fine form, endured the pressure and went on to dominate the last 10 minutes.
Matt Ruxton and Edwards tormented the defence to earn several short corners with Imran Yousaf capping an excellent second-half team display with two more goals on 65 and 68 minutes.
Stourport head to bottom-of-the-table Southgate on Saturday and play a team who drew with leaders Bowdon at the weekend.
West Bridgford 5 Stourport 2nds 3
One of their finest displays of the season failed to save the seconds from defeat in an important relegation battle.
Again struck by injuries and unavailabilities, they travelled with just 10 players but were still confident of a result.
Paul Taylor and Ade Hoskins shored up the defence, while Marc Edwards continued his excellent form at inside-left.
Edwards' strength on the ball allowed man-of-the-match Mark Harradine to secure plenty of possession but Stourport lacked penetration.
West Bridgford opened the scoring against the run of play when a quick hit across goal was slapped in by an unmarked attacker.
The home side doubled their lead within five minutes from a powerful short corner.
Inexperienced Stourport did not cave in with Tom Lewis playing his best game for the club, Mike Shaw impressing and Nick Chambers running at the defence.
A short-corner strike from Hoskins allowed Stourport to break only one goal down.
Chambers rounded the keeper to slot home the equaliser in the second period after being released by Steve Ellis.
Within two minutes, Ben Everett-Li beat a defender, passed for Lewis to cut inside and strike a reverse-stick shot into the net.
West Bridgford were rattled but took advantage of having more players to drag themselves back onto the game.
As Stourport's legs tired, two goals were scrambled in as the Nottingham side smashed long balls into the circle.
A deflected effort killed off Stourport who sit one place above the relegation zone and face two tough fixtures with Belper and Cannock.
Stourport 3rds 3 Belper 1
The thirds were again benefactors of second-team unavailabilities and clocked up another win.
Loughborough Students 2 Stourport 3rds 1
The town played their hearts out in a morning fixture and stifled the students with one of their best performances of the year.
Stourport looked odds on for an unfancied win with only 10 minutes to go but the home side equalised and scored a last-gasp winner against the run of play.
