CONTRARY to John Hinton's letter (You Say, Friday, November 7) "theism" has been the greatest cause of despair and human suffering in this world, not atheism.
I personally do not indulge in "aimless atheism" as he suggests. I like to think my life-stance is a very rewarding and positive one, favouring a humanistic perspective rather than the glorification of something supernatural and unknown.
Over many years of wider association with secular and humanist movements, I have been privileged to meet numerous atheists and sceptics from all walks of life who contribute to the greater good of society.
I don't begrudge Mr Hinton his Christian values, which I am sure are admirable. But, to be perfectly blunt, I just cannot believe a God created our human species solely to procure flattery from us. No offence intended - it's just another viewpoint!
