I have just returned from a wonderful autumn walk through the area that will be the Sensory Garden in the fullness of time.
It was good for the soul and I found the plants interesting and their shades and textures soothing, given that the play area and footballers were going full blast. I fail to understand the critics and especially their emotive and hurtful language.
I have a plaque on my wall given to me many years ago by a Canadian relative. It is the Indian Prayer and it says: "Grant that I may not criticise my neighbour until I have walked a mile in his moccasins".
Mercifully and with gratitude, I have never had to walk the mile of being other than temporarily sensory or ability deprived. I find it hard to imagine how those who do have these difficulties cope with their daily lives and I would have thought that anything that can bring them some pleasure would be welcomed.
I have, however, walked the mile of being involved with the Malvern Access Group. I know exactly how much thought and effort has gone into this project; the disappointment when more people have not attended the AGMs when the project was discussed; the imagination and work that has gone into raising money through innovative and exciting activities; the volume of meetings and discussions around devising, planning and funding the scheme.
No, the Sensory Garden has not reached perfection yet, but then neither has my garden which I've been remodelling for two seasons now. I have a vision of what I want to achieve but without the practical help of my neighbours I would not have got as far as I have.
Surely that is what is important with the Sensory Garden too. The vision is there, what is needed now is the practical support and encouragement.
