TACKLING traffic problems in Welland will be high on the parish council's list of priorities.

Councillors plan to meet Mike Davies, of the Malvern Hills Highways Partnership, to discuss what can be done to control the problem of vehicles speeding through the village, including the possibility of installing a camera on Drake Street.

The speed limit on the main road was recently reduced from 40mph to 30mph and a temporary speed camera installed and monitored by West Mercia Police, which the council said was very successful.

Councillors, who discussed the issue at a meeting on Monday, feel that something more permanent is needed, but as Welland is not one of the 400 accident black spots in Worcestershire, the police do not have to provide cameras.

Coun Alex Burgess suggested calling the police whenever someone was spotted speeding, to let them know the size of the problem.

He said: "We do have a problem with traffic and can't finance funding cameras but what we can do is be involved in reporting speeding to the police. If we ring the police every day, that will impact on them. They will then have to do something about it."

A date for the meeting with Mike Davies has yet to be set but chairman Roy Locke said he would write to MP Sir Michael Spicer and to the Chief Constable of West Mercia Police on the issue.
