A Malvern doctor has led an award-winning project researching the health of seafarers.
Dr Tim Carter, of Alexandra Road, works as chief medical advisor for the Department of Transport.
He and his team were presented with a £10,000 BUPA Foundation Award in London on Tuesday, November 11.
Dr Carter said he was delighted to receive the award.
His team worked developing new medical standards aimed at reducing the risk of ill health for people who work at sea.
"This will make seafaring safer and make sure that seafarers are given better advice on health so they can complete their careers and not get ill early in life," he said.
Thanks to the work of Dr Carter and his team, each UK seafarer will be medically assessed every two years to ensure they are fit for the job.
Dr Carter said that most of the prize money would be put into organising an international workshop on improving the quality of medical assessment for seafarers.
Although he lives in Malvern, Dr Carter spends a lot of time in London and Southampton due to the nature of his work.
He has a keen interest in the history of Worcester and is doing part-time research into anthrax in Kidderminster's wool industry for a degree at Birmingham University.
