WORCESTER Portobello star Dean Jameson recorded his second successive club victory when he tamed a frost-affected top pool at Brockamin fishery.
Drawn on peg three, opposite the car park, Jameson -- whose previous win came during the club's last outing to Willow Marsh -- used an unusual concoction of dead maggot hook bait presented on pole tackle to take around a dozen skimmers which, along with two useful carp, together tipped the scales at a match winning 16-14-0.
Runner up prize went to club secretary Max Hill who surprisingly lost only one fish on his way to recording a weight of 15-12-0. Hill ignored professional advice and changed to maggot bait on a straight ledger rig tight against the island on peg 22 to take just two carp, the biggest close to double figures.
New member Jerry Thomas came third with an all silver fish net of 10-3-0 which came from peg 27 while in fourth spot was Malvern man Dave Powell whose two carp net of 5-10-0 came from peg 32.
The next Portobello match is on Sunday on Broadheath fisheries Willow pool. Members wishing to compete on the club's fur and feather contest on December 7 should notify Max Hill as soon as possible.
WDUAA held the third round of their popular winter league series on the notoriously difficult Perdiswell section of the canal which, along with the previous night's plummeting temperatures, led to a low catch rate among the 60-odd competitors.
Top man on the day was canal record holder Colin Davis who netted 4-5-0 of roach to eight ounces when he offered caster well across on peg 73 near the Ash tree. Second place went to Nic Doherty on nearby peg 71. Doherty didn't find any roach but did instead net a number of perch by using pinkie bait which together weighed in at 2-10-7.
Hemp king Gary Owen took the final prize but had to substitute his favourite bait for chopped worm in order to take a good hybrid and a few perch for 2-2-0.
Section winners were -- (A) Alan Baldwin, (B) Andy Collins, (C) Nick Vaughan, (D) Paul Bailey.
Scoring just nine penalty points were top team Good Intent, they were followed on the day by Spa MG with nineteen points while Muppets were third on 20.
The league after three rounds puts Good Intent out in front with 68 followed by Spa MG with 71 and in equal third place are Greenman and Worcester MG, both teams having 78 points.
Upton-upon-Severn has returned to the form of three years ago which saw the venue heralded as the best winter river fishery in the country.

Top angler on the day was local star Colin Harvey who turned in a dazzling display of waggler fishing when he weighed in a match winning net of redfins going 26-11-0 from peg 19. Second was Eckington's Lawrence Hibbs who's 15-6-0 also fell to the waggler on peg 10. Third came Tim Wilson with 13-7-0 while in fourth place was Pete Jones weighing another roach catch of 12-1-8.
The Avon at Eckington also returned to form after last week's dismal result when Irish exile Dave Wallace took the honours with a straight lead caught roach net of 13-9-0 from peg 23 below the railway bridge.
Claiming the runner up spot for the second day running was Lawrence Hibbs who's 12-11-0 of roach came from the first peg above the bridge, whilst club stalwart Stuart Spencer netted 11-5-0 of roach for third place.
The best catch of the day was taken by young angler Nigel White who landed a rare specimen tench weighing a fantastic eight pounds three ounces!
