THE latest round of the Malvern United Angling Association's winter league was held on the club's stretch of the River Avon at Birlingham last Sunday and once again there was a large turnout.
Despite the mild weather fishing was going to be hard as the river was gin clear and in need of some fresh water and this would make the fish reluctant to feed.
This was exactly how it turned out with most competitors struggling for bites. One of those that did manage to catch was Tom Hawker who left his trusty feeder rod in the bag and tackled his swim with float tactics.
Casting under the branches of an overhanging tree Tom used maggots on the hook to tempt three small perch and a few gudgeon for an unlikely winning weight of 0-12-0.
Second place went to match secretary Ian Goddard who winkled out six gudgeon on pole tactics for 0-6-0. Treasurer John Shaw was close behind with a similar haul for just 0-5-0
The next contest in the series is on November 30 at the pool, draw 9am fish 9.30-1.30pm.
NB. Important information for members.
