THE downside of promotion to the frontline of politics is that any slip will be gleefully observed.
Julie Kirkbride, the new shadow Culture Secretary, was caught out within days.
According to listeners, when asked on Radio Four what her favourite film was she replied: "Gone with the Wind and, er, anything with Jack Nicklaus."
Presenter Mark Lawson, who was a little bemused, replied: "Ah, do you mean Jack Nicholson?"
"Oh, yes, that's right," she replied - which was reassuring, since Mr Nicklaus is a legendary golfer.
In fairness to Julie, she's not the first culture spokesman to be caught out.
While Tory Culture Secretary, Stephen Dorrell was asked to name characters from famous British soap operas.
Mr Dorrell, who lives in Worcester, failed miserably.
