A PROJECT is being launched in Worcester to find volunteers willing to help sports clubs across the county.

National charity TimeBank has awarded a £4,900 grant to the city's volunteer bureau for the six-month scheme.

The bureau's team will work with regional sports clubs on ways to attract, involve and retain volunteers and to help the clubs identify new volunteer roles.

"We are really pleased to be able to undertake this piece of work as it will open up a range of opportunities for people of all ages," said Sally Ellison, Worcester city volunteer bureau manager.

"Sports volunteering can be a great way to stay in shape, while helping your local community."

The scheme will include activities as diverse as life-saving, football, horse riding and boxing.

Those who volunteer as coaches, or organise events also have the chance to achieve a Government-recognised award.

As part of the Millennium Volunteers initiative, anyone between 16 and 24 is eligible to receive the award, while helping the community at the same time.

Lisa Lennon, placement liaison officer for South Worcestershire Millennium Volunteers, said volunteering opportunities in sport were increasingly difficult to find, but hoped the project would change that situation.

"Young people in general have a wealth of skills and enthusiasm to contribute to volunteering. Hopefully, they will come forward, improve their skills in a sporting, enabling capacity and at the same time increasing their own personal development," she said.

The scheme will be promoted through youth and community groups, colleges, schools and libraries.

Any sports clubs that want further information, or individuals interested in volunteering, can contact Tilly Snape project co-ordinator on 01905 24741 or email tilly.wcvb@btconnect.
