THE quarter finals of The Soccer Site Malvern Football League's Senior Cup were played on Sunday.
Holders Oak Allstars, of Division One, visited high-flying Division Two side Madresfield and went through by virtue of a 6-0 victory with goals from Chris Stone, Mark Toman, a brace from Jamie James and a Lee Clueit hat-trick.
However, the game was far from as one sided as the scoreline suggested as Madresfield missed several chances which they would have put away on any other day.
The game between Bishops Frome and Morgan Aero 8 started at quite a pace with both sides probing the others defence before Bishops Frome took the lead when Jason Westmacott seized upon a rebound to slot the ball home.
The same player made it 2-0 from the penalty spot a few minutes later despite a gallant effort by visiting keeper Steve Davies, who managed to get a hand to the ball.
Fresh from a six-goal haul the previous week Stewart Graham got onto the score sheet when a superb through ball from Jason Westmacott saw him race through to net. It became 4-0 when Neil Berry hit the ball home from the edge of the area. Stewart Graham then got his hat-trick with firstly a superb lob from 25 yards and then rising to head home following a corner to make it 6-0 at half time.
Far from giving in Morgan came out battling in the second half urged on by Richard Bird and pulled a goal back through Marcus Eden. Stewart Graham netted his fourth when he finished off an excellent passing move but Morgan came back to make the final score 7-2 when James Allen belted the ball home. Despite the scoreline Morgan keeper Steve Davies had a good game pulling of several fine saves.
The all Division One tie between AFC Grovesnor and Talbot was a close, hard-fought affair which saw the home side go through by virtue of a 3-2 victory. Adrian Wooler gave the home side the lead before Talbot came back to make it 2-1 with goals from Gary Baldwin and Danny Briscoe. Stuart Hollings equalised before victory was secured when Darron Hobbs netted direct from a corner.
The other Division Two team still in the competition, Cross Keys, ensured their division would be represented in the semi-finals when they comprehensively defeated visiting Division One side Kempsey United A 5-0. A 25-yard volley from Lee Phillips gave Cross Keys the lead, a deflected free kick from Willie Gray made it 2-0. Following up Trevor Wargen then made it 3-0 when he seized on a rebound from a Graham Lowen shot and smashed the ball home Jamie Thomas then went on a mazy dribble down the left wing beating several opponents before curling the ball over the keeper with a left foot shot to make it 4-0 at half time. The best goal of the game was saved for last when Anthony Smudger Smith beat four defenders before rounding the keeper and slotting the ball home.
Cross Keys reward for their victory is a home tie in the semi-final against holders Oak Allstars whilst Bishops Frome entertain AFC Grovesnor on December 14.
In the only league fixture Division Two side Cavalry Arms at last broke their duck and notched up their first points of their season when they visited Perowne Park Rangers and won 2-1.
Their goals both came from Rob Jones with John Murphy being on target for the home side. This result meant not only had Cavalry lost the unenviable distinction of being the only side in the two divisions without a point but they now also move off the bottom of the table.
Following the results of the quarter-finals of the Senior Cup the draw was made for the first round of the President's Cup and the games are as follows: Cavalry Arms v Madresfield, Perowne Park Rangers v Talbot Head, Vauxhall AFC v Great Malvern, Dynamo Ledbury v Fromes Hill. Byes: Bell Inn 98, Club AC 30, Kempsey United A, Morgan Aero 8.
Games to be played on Sunday, January 11 .
