RANGERS entertained newcomers to the league Reality Sport who comprised a number of ex-Malvern Town Youth players and a couple of former Rangers players, but who were devoid of a few players who had played earlier in the season.
MALVERN RANGERS 5, REALITY SPORTS 1
As it transpired Rangers' recent improved results continued with their first home league victory of the season and their best league result for a couple of seasons.
Rangers had the ideal start opening the scoring after only 90 seconds. Neil Cole's attempted back pass fell short of keeper Carl Preece and Simon Brookes was able to capitalise on the error with a simple left foot shot into the goal. Rangers increased their advantage after 16 minutes with a good goal. Chris Davis, Mark Taylor and Ewan Castle combined to set up Simon Brookes whose excellent lob into the far corner gave Carl Preece little chance.
On the half hour mark Rangers scored number three. Martin Philpotts made an excellent run past a number of players into the box and his low shot was well saved by Preece for a corner. When the corner came over Preece dropped the ball and Ewan Castle was on hand in the crowded goal mouth to tap home. Five minutes later and it was 4-0.
An excellent right sided cross by Steve Hodges to the far post saw Simon Brookes rise well and score with a very well directed header. Four minutes before the interval Reality were thrown a life line when Mark Taylor was adjudged to have fouled James Hodgkins as he cut inside in the penalty area and captain Dean Spiers confidently converted the resultant spot kick despite the brave attempt by Ross Sanders.
During the second half, which didn't see too much goal mouth activity and didn't see the Rangers goal seriously threatened, it gave manager Roger Kitchener the opportunity to introduce Lee Richardson for his debut, Owain Rowat and late in the game Sean Clarke.
Ten minutes before the end after a series of near misses Owain Rowat saw his well struck shot well saved by Preece before Simon Brookes struck the top of the crossbar. One minute before the end the scoring was completed when Lee Richardson's right sided cross was fumbled by Preece and Simon Brookes completed his personal salvo with a simple fourth goal and Rangers' fifth. Before the final whistle Mark Taylor struck Lee Richardson's cut back over the bar when well-placed.
Man of the match was Simon Brookes.
Tomorrow (Saturday) Rangers, sponsored by Strikes, entertain third placed Bilston Town in a West Midlands League Division One (South) fixture. Kick off 2.15pm, players to meet at Victoria Park playing fields prompt 1.15pm.
