POLICE are continuing to question a former Kidderminster Harriers striker following a road incident in which a 56-year-old man died.

Lee Hughes, who now plays for West Bromwich Albion, remains in custody at Little Park Street police station, Coventry.

West Midlands Police say Hughes' silver Mercedes C155 coup was in collision with a Renault Mgane in Pickford Grange Lane, Meriden, near Coventry, shortly after midnight on Sunday.

"The 27-year-old man who was arrested yesterday in connection with the incident remains in custody," said a police spokeswoman.

West Bromwich Albion confirmed Hughes would not be playing in the match against Cardiff City tonight.

"Until the full facts of the situation are understood, the club will make no further comment except to say Lee will not be considered for selection for Tuesday evening's game against Cardiff City since he missed training on both Sunday and Monday," read a statement issued by the club.

Douglas Graham, from Coventry, who was in the back seat of the Mgane, died from his injuries. He leaves a widow, four children and four grandchildren.

His wife, who was also a passenger, was treated at Coventry and Warwickshire Hospital for a broken leg.

The male driver suffered a broken pelvis and another male passenger also suffered bruising.
