PLANS to close more than a quarter of Worcester's post offices have been described as "devastating" and "absolutely crazy" by city councillors.

Cabinet members criticised proposals drawn up by Royal Mail to shut five of the city's 19 sub-post offices next February.

Councillors were particularly worried for residents living in the west of the city - closures in Lower Wick and Himbleton Road, Henwick which, would place extra pressure on the St John's branch.

"I accept the position Royal Mail is losing money every day, but whether acting to change should be at the expense of people in rural or urban areas is one we can usefully debate," explained council leader Councillor Stephen Inman at last night's meeting.

"Closing the Astwood Road branch, on a arterial route through town is absolutely crazy," said Labour councillor Paul Denham, speaking as a non-cabinet member.

Coun Derek Prodger, for Bedwardine ward, said the St John's branch was already overcrowded with customers who are sometimes forced to queue outside.

"I think this will be quite devastating for the people who rely on the post office," added deputy leader Coun Simon Geraghty.

The cabinet agreed to write to Royal Mail as part of its consultation period which ends in mid-December.
