MATT Blackmore kicked four penalties from five attempts as Droitwich Spa RFC First XV defied the fog to beat Ledbury.

Spa's first ever game under floodlights last Friday was tough on spectators who were unable to see large spells of the game due to dense freezing fog.

Indeed, there were times when it was impossible to tell what was going on beyond half way.

Bu the fact that Spa won, was all that mattered for director of rugby Julian Bailey.

He said: "It's an important two points and I think that's the most important factor. We wanted to win the game.

"They are a good side and they played well. It was a tough game but two points is two points. I am happy we are still going to be plugging away at the leaders.

"I am happy with the performance considering the conditions."

Bailey's side held the upper hand in the early exchanges with Blackmore slotting a simple penalty before adding a much more difficult effort soon after.

Droitwich seemed to be in control but went off the boil and began to give away simple penalties. Fortunately Ledbury could not capitalise on these errors and Droitwich went into half time 6-0 up.

The second period began much as the first had ended with the hosts making too many errors before Blackmore added to the lead with a well struck 40-metre effort.

Then came Droitwich's best period of play. Phil Horton won a lineout to see the ever-impressive Lee Mortlock drive over the line. Blackmore converted. At 17-0 Ledbury were beaten but the visitors came back strongly to score a penalty and a late unconverted try through winger Kieron Hallum.
