JULIAN Thake quoted some interesting numbers in defence of his view that the euro currency is to blame for Germany's economic woes (You Say, Wednesday, November 19).
Knowing from long and bitter experience that anti-EU propagandists cannot be relied upon to get things right, I picked just one claim for investigation.
Julian wrote that "185 C&A shops in Germany (are) now taking deutschmarks again".
I e-mailed C&A in Germany and asked if this was true. Their spokesman replied: "One year ago we accepted the DM as a special promotion before Christmas, but we do not repeat this promotion in this year."
There is a moral to this story. You simply cannot take anything that the anti-EU lobby says at face value. Always check it out for yourself. You will invariably discover mistakes, inaccuracies and distortions.
