WHY are the Tories so keen to have a referendum on the European Constitution?
Only one UK-wide referendum has ever been held. This was in 1975, when the question was whether the UK should stay in or withdraw from the EU. We voted 2 to 1 in favour.
The Tories were in power when we had the Single European Act, Maastricht, Amsterdam and Nice Treaties.
Why didn't they want a referendum then when more changes were being made?
It is interesting to note that most Tories voted against a referendum then.
It's a pity they didn't ask us for a referendum on the Poll Tax!
