TWO young girls who had earlier played in the band at Saturday's switching on of Bromsgrove's Christmas lights extravaganza were assaulted by yobs as they prepared to leave the town.
One was given first aid at the scene before being taken to Redditch's Alexandra Hospital for treatment. Police this week appealed for witnesses to two incidents which they are describing as an indecent assault on one girl and an assault on the other.
The attack, in the Strand, marred what had otherwise been a happy day enjoyed by thousands of people who packed High Street to see district council chairman, Councillor John Tidmarsh, throw the switch to light up the town.
He later described the incident as 'disgusting.'
He said: "The reputation of our fair town and district has been sullied,"
The girls are both members of Bromsgrove and Redditch Training Ship Kingfisher Sea Cadet Corps which traditionally provides music for the annual civic event.
On Sunday on behalf of the council, Cllr Tidmarsh personally hand delivered a letter of apology to the Corps commander Mr Kerwin at his home at Hewell.
In it he said: "The incident reflects with shame on Bromsgrove that our guests should be treated so."
He has also written to council leader Cllr Dennis Norton (Con-St John's) asking him to investigate the attack and take criminal proceedings if appropriate.
A spokeswoman for Bromsgrove police said the incident happened just before 6pm as the band was preparing to leave.
She could not confirm reports the men had been drinking heavily at a town pub just prior to the attack.
One of the offenders snatched one of the girl's hats and ran off pursued by the victim and a friend. The alleged incidents happened during an ensuing struggle.
One girl received facial injuries and given first aid by a member of St John Ambulance Brigade. She was later discharged from hospital after treatment.
One offender is said to be 6ft tall with dark hair and clad in dark clothes.
The other is 5ft 7in and was wearing a long sleeved grey top with blue or black squiggles.
Detectives have examined CCTV footage of the attack in their search for the pair.
Witnesses should contact PC Philip Hamilton on 08457 444888.
