AT the last meeting, Ken Hughes gave a talk on Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter.

He traced its origins, the estate of the Colmore family who built Newhall, which gives its name to Newhall Street.

As people moved out towards the suburbs, it was decided to build houses on the original site.

Merchants used the houses for business as well as homes and gradually silversmiths and jewellers moved in to run their businesses.

As a result of the importance of the manufacture of silver, Birmingham has its own Assay Office, of which the hallmark is an anchor.

Ken also pointed out the many fine buildings in the area, which are now protected, and the quarter has its own museum which people can visit.

The next meeting is the Christmas party on Tuesday, December 9, at Feckenham Village Hall. The speaker is Bob Bushaway, who will talk about Customs at Christmas. All welcome.
