POLICE in Redditch are warning householders not to respond to hard-sell tactics from companies promoting sales of home security systems.
Crime Risk Manager Pc Stan Baker is recommending people considering the installation of an alarm should call either NACOSS (National Approval Council for Security Systems) on 01628 773367 or SSAIB (Security Systems and Alarm Inspection Board) on 0191 296 3242.
Both organisations can provide a list of accredited companies that supply remote signalling alarms which are accepted by police.
Pc Baker said: "We recommend getting quotes from at least two alarm installers and checking credentials of the companies and identities of their representatives.
"Consider whether an alarm is a requirement of your insurance and if the alarm company is acceptable to your insurer.
"Check the company operates a 24-hour call-out service and a four-hour emergency attendance and ensure any quotation includes the terms of maintenance and monitoring contracts and that installations comply with European and British standards.
"Any good alarm installer will be able to supply a list of police rules for occupiers of premises with alarms, as well as written confirmation that the company is acceptable to the police for transmission of alarm messages from new installations."
