A STORE sign has become a "second moon" for residents on a Worcester estate, who claim it's just one of the new supermarket's many nuisances.

More than 20 disgruntled neighbours have handed in a petition to their ward councillor Mike Layland, covering a range of complaints about the Lidl store in Newtown Road, Ronkswood.

The petition, submitted by the Lower Newtown Road Residents' Association, states the supermarket's luminous sign, which stands around 9ft tall, should have been built at ground level.

It claims its car park should have also been landscaped, but a wall, railings and a row of trees to act as screening for neighbouring houses haven't all been planted or built yet.

They also claim litter and open food skips are further problems, while a car dumped and vandalised in its car park is an extra eyesore.

"The Lidl entrance sign is left on throughout the night, along with the stores outside strip lights and it's just like staring at an extra moon," said one resident, who asked not to be named.

"We were told there would be trees, walls and railings to improve its looks but none of this has happened."

The residents' association has likened the landscape around Lidl as "a desert, which has only lamp-posts, poles and signs growing".

Three trees have so far been planted around the store.

Coun Layland said he would be raising all the issues of concern at today's city council planning meeting.

"These residents simply shouldn't have to be living with this problems," he said.

Principal planning officer Peter Yates was unavailable for comment yesterday. A Lidl spokeswoman declined to comment.
